Subject: Jewish life in the old Jewish quarter of Pest
We, the undersigned are petitioning you to consider the necessity of
conserving the traditional Jewish lifestyle, in addition to social issues
and those related to preserving historic buildings and to urban development
when implementing the revitalisation of the old Jewish quarter of
Erzsébetváros.
This quarter hosted a thriving life of a singularly open Jewish community in
the second half of the 19th and in the first half of the 20th century. For
decades, the Jewish quarter in Pest was the engine of the process whereby
Budapest developed into a multicultural metropolis, and it was only the
institutionalised racism that reduced it to a secluded ghetto.
The Holocaust was not over with the stigmatisation, segregation, plundering
and physical annihilation of the quarters residents. For the rest of Jewry,
not even the minimum conditions are left to preserve the lifestyle required
for their survival.
Please be aware that the future of Hungarian Jewry is inseparable from the
existence of the traditional way of life. You are kindly requested to assume
this responsibility, and to use the resources at your disposal to promote
the revival of Jewish life and the development of a Kosher neighbourhood
in the Jewish triangle, i.e. the tiny area bordered by the three large
synagogues in Pest, in support of the following issues:
1. To limit vehicle traffic at the weekends.
2. To regulate the operating conditions of restaurants, bars and food shops,
and to prefer kosher services.
3. To support the development of flats suitable for the traditional way of
life.
4. To facilitate the development of the abandoned Rumbach synagogue into a
religious, cultural and community centre.
