Saving Budapest’s Jewish quarter - 2life Magazine

The project is the first political Jewish project in Second Life.

Shofar Media – the independent Jewish news portal

The independent Jewish news portal has been active since June 2003. Due to our uniquely developed technology we present a huge quantity of information to our visitors in a carefully systematized way on many tens of thousand (!) pages.

Up-to-minute. Our JNA24 media observer grinds out the news of the Hungarian language media related to Jewry and Israel in 24 hours a day. Our calendar of events – beyond religious information – covers all Jewish-related events in the country. At every daybreak we send our newsletter full up with the latest news, information and programme offers to many hundreds of addresses.

Comprehensive. Our reading room, lexicon and encyclopaedia are inexhaustible sources of background information, books, essays and historical documents. Just to name a few: Jewish quarter dossier, Jewish minority dossier, all anti-Jewish law since 1796 , or the book ‘The Jewish State’ by Herzl. Dozens of photo albums have been arranged in our Gallery on an ongoing basis. Our Compass is an unparalleled starting point to Hungarian and foreign websites dealing with Jewish issues.

Personal. Our registered members write Internet diaries (blogs), exchange private letters and freely discuss topics in our Forum.

Shofargo – the Jewish companion and company seeker

Shofargo is the newest Hungarian language Jewish companion and company seeker service. In our quickly growing community you will find friends, pen pals and people to talk to, and, sooner or later, perhaps your partner may also appear among us. In our private forum you can freely discuss any topic, get community information, participate in language games and share your problems with others. Several hundreds of people have joined us since November 2005, not only from various regions of the country but from abroad as well. Many have already found their companions, others only look for company. At Shofargo there is a teeming life in every age group.

Shofargo is different. Beyond our sophisticated searching system we also offer further efficient services to help you to set up contacts. We do attend to anonymity, private correspondence is coded with en encrypting algorithm, therefore not even the webmasters are allowed to view that. Shofargo is free of ads.

Not only on Internet. We have launched Shofar Club in the real world, too. Bálint Jewish Community Center provides a warm and friendly home for the club. Inspired by the success of the first several pilot meetings, we will continue our programs in the autumn season with a renewed and rich selection of programs.

Radio Zs – the Jewish community radio

Radio Zs is the first Hungarian language Jewish community radio which has been broadcasting its pilot program on Internet since October 2003. Radio Zs is an unprecedented new non-profit, self-organised and organic media. We have listeners all over the world; several hundreds of people listen to our programs every day.

Our 168 hours/week program with its flexible program structure enables any Jewish organisation, institute, community or media to autonomously introduce themselves to the others an to the general public.

Technical background or the radio is provided by the Shofar Association using its own resources without any outside support. The radio transmits its program through the web with an automatic schedule in 24 hours a day; hopefully, in the future ground based broadcast will also be possible.

Thanks to our technical background it is possible to listen to our broadcast on any computer in the world with Internet access and sound card or even on modern PDAs and mobile phones. In any part of the Earth ground based or satellite stations may be connected to the system, therefore it will be possible to receive our program on traditional and satellite receivers as well.

Kosher neighbourhood – for a living and liveable Jewish quarter

Have you taken a walk in the Jewish quarter recently? Can you see what is happening? Do you understand what is happening? Is it happening for you?

As a by-product of the rehabilitation process that cannot be deferred, the physical basis of the Jewish cultural heritage will be destroyed once and for all. Not simply run-down and dilapidated houses are being bulldozed here but the last traces of Jewish tradition are being destroyed through spontaneous population exchange and by cynical political recklessness. The Jewish quarter is being transformed, by leaps and bounds, into a crowded, characterless bedroom suburb where nothing but several memorial plates beside the aimlessly towering synagogues will keep the memory of Jews once dwelling here. On top of the ruins, however, 21st-century Jewish subculture grows in the wild. The nation of the ruin pubs has a huge farewell party before the last uninhabited tenement block giving home to a ruin pub is demolished.

Shofar Association is initiating a petition in order to revive at least a tiny area of the Jewish quarter: the old Pest Jewish Triangle bordered by the three large synagogues. Let us give a chance to young people and this spontaneous alternative Jewish culture to revitalise the neighbourhood where once our parents and grandparents were living, loving, working and having fun. As a last chance, it might still be realised on the basis of the Kosher neighbourhood.

Kosher neighbourhood petition

Number of signatories: 16018

Subject: Jewish life in the old Jewish quarter of Pest

We, the undersigned are petitioning you to consider the necessity of conserving traditional Jewish lifestyle when implementing the revitalisation of the old Jewish quarter of Erzsébetváros, in addition to considering social issues and those related to preserving historic buildings and to urban development.

The President missed the opportunity...

"Mr. George W. Bush
President of the United States of America

Distinguished Mr. President,

We were delighted to learn that You will be visiting our country in the near future.

May we ask You to include, in your busy itinerary, at least a glance from your car's window to bid farewell to Budapest's old Jewish quarter, once cradle to the father of Zionism Theodor Herzl, as well as to dozens of Nobel-prize winners."

Bálint Ház

Hungarian Jewish Community Radio Project - Proposal Jan 16, 2004

The main objective of the project is to set up a local Jewish radio station on a non-profit basis with the aim to provide an overall communication channel for the Hungarian Jewry. The radio will project a new approach in terms of anti Semitism, the state of Israel and Judaism. It will influence the Hungarian public opinion by means of unbiased reportage and provide a framework of reference for its audience. At the same time it will express the unique voice of Hungarian Jews.

New horizons

The concept of the Hungarian Shofar Association named New horizons can be viewed as an attempt to form a new overall strategy of 21st century for the European Jewry, with the purpose of sharing information . We are suggesting a brand new approach that could work in a coherent system in trying to reduce or reverse negative tendencies, empowering and speeding the positive ones up while preserving the delicate balance of existing structures, giving free space to organic developments to thrive.

Radio Zs developments

My Dear Friend,

I would like to inform you about the latest developments of setting up Radio Zs, the first Hungarian language Jewish radio station. Our current transmission is a pilot model, put together mainly by me in order to demonstrate in practice that it is possible to establish a Hungarian Jewish Radio for the very first time.

MTI Communication and intro letter
