Distinguished Mr. President,

We were delighted to learn that You will be visiting our country in the near future.

May we ask You to include, in your busy itinerary, at least a glance from your car’s window to bid farewell to Budapest’s old Jewish quarter, once cradle to the father of Zionism Theodor Herzl, as well as to dozens of Nobel-prize winners.

You and the ones to follow You may never again get to see the birthplace of Hungarian Jewry that has come down from over a million, about to be bulldozed off just to become another uninspiring and overcrowded neighborhood.

Cast your eyes up to see probably the most magnificent synagogues and pay respect to the memory of those who once populated these enormous buildings. Bid farewell to the grandchildren who still live here to resuscitate these ruined houses of a world being destructed beyond reason.

Because there are Jews who still dwell here, the sub-culture of Jewish youth is flourishing. However, in this corner of the world we may still be put to shame if short-sighted and irresponsible behavior results in the disappearance of the place our Jewish predecessors once lived, worked and loved.

The Jewish quarter is only a couple of hundreds of yards away from the Houses of Parliament where You Mr. President will be received by Hungary’s dignitaries in a welcome ceremony. Please honor us with this tiny gesture, it will only take a few minutes of Your time. Believe us it will be an experience of a lifetime.

Tisztelt Elnök Úr,

Nagy örömmel értesültünk arról, hogy a közeljövőben felkeresi hazánkat.

Szeretnénk megkérni, hogy zsúfolt programja közepette, legalább a gépkocsija ablakából vessen egy búcsúpillantást a régi pesti zsidónegyedre, ahol a cionizmus atyja, Theodor Herzl mellett Nobel-díjasok tucatjainak a bölcsője ringott.

Soha többé nem lesz alkalma sem Önnek, sem utódainak, hogy láthassák a valaha milliós magyarországi zsidóság szülőhelyét, amelyet most buldózerek pusztítanak el, hogy a helyére jellegtelen, túlzsúfolt alvóvárost építsenek.

Pillantson fel a világ talán legszebb zsinagógáira, s hajtson fejet azok emléke előtt, akik valaha megtöltötték ezeket a hatalmas épületeket. Intsen búcsút a ma még itt élő unokáknak, dédunokáknak, akik talán utoljára életet lehelnek ennek az értelmetlenül elpusztuló világnak a romos házaiba.

Mert ma még élnek itt zsidók, virágzik a zsidó fiatalság szubkultúrája. Azonban a világnak ezen a fertályán még megeshet az a szégyen, hogy rövidlátás és felelőtlenség miatt eltűnik az a hely, ahol zsidó őseink valaha éltek, dolgoztak, és szerettek.

A zsidónegyed alig pár száz méterre fekszik a Parlamenttől, ahol Önt ünnepélyesen fogadják Magyarország állami vezetői. Kérjük, tegye meg ezt az apró gesztust, csak pár percébe kerül. Higgye el, életre szóló élményben lesz része.
